Seeing the LIGHT on Red Wines

Our last feature on preservative-free
and organic wines created lots of interest!
Including many diner questions about LIGHTER red wines
So, in response, here's a range of recommendations...

2008
Brown Brothers
Dolcetto & Syrah

Cruickshank Wines
Cabernet Franc

Bright magenta in colour, with a nose offering fresh aromas of blackcurrant, red berries and hints of spice. The palate delivers flavours of ripe summer berries and a natural grape sweetness. All balanced by the frizzante feel providing a refreshing, lively finish. A wine best enjoyed chilled when still young and vibrant.
This 100% Cabernet Franc wine has a rich deep brick-red colour and spicy berry fruit bouquet with subtle oak complexity. It will appeal to lighter palates with its medium weight, round, mouth filling fruit flavours and a nice soft tannin finish. Will cellar for 2 to 5 years.
2008 Teusner Salsa Rosé
Around $20-25

2007
Pizzini Rosetta
Sangiovese Rosé

Deliberately made by winemaker Kym Teusner to contrast with the many Aussie sweet rosés. A blend of Grenache, Shiraz & Mourvedre fruit grown specifically for rosés with grapes picked with plenty of natural acidity and freshness, fermented (dry style) and matured in old oak on lees to impart creamy texture to the wine.
Enticing rosé made from Sangiovese grapes with a bouquet of tropical fruits and stone fruits. It's smooth and tasty with a trace of fruit sweetness running through it but the overall impression is savoury and appetising. Intensity and vibrancy of flavour with refreshingly dry finish.
2008 Chain of Ponds
Novello Rosso

2006 Chapel Hill
Il Vescovo Sangiovese
Around $24

41% Grenache and 59% Sangiovese crushed together, have produced a light red colour with hints of vibrant strawberry pink. Aromas of juicy red fruits, strawberries and red cherries, plus a touch of cinnamon spice adding to overall complexity. A truly enjoyable wine that's perfect for our alfresco lifestyle.
Made from the native grape of Tuscany, Italy, this refreshing McLaren Vale red provides juicy flavours of dark cherries and plums – but with a savoury edge. Low tannin levels and light oak combine at the finish to create an excellent food accompaniment that's not too heavy. Great with pizzas or richer pastas.
2004 Zema Merlot
Around $30-35

2008 John Gehrig
Gamay

From a family vineyard on the Coonawarra terra rossa strip. 100 % estate grown fruit ensures wines of exceptional depth of flavour. This highly regarded and awarded producer was not only given a 5 star winery rating but also Best of the Region. Zema only make a Merlot when grape quality is outstanding and 2004 was such a year.
An exceptional light dry red in traditional Beaujolais style, ideal for easy, middle of the day drinking. With low tannins and fresh garden berry aromas, this wine can readily be served slightly chilled. Great for pizza, pasta, antipasto or light game dishes. One of Australia's benchmark Gamays clearly demonstrating the winemaker's extensive Burgundian experiences.
